Graves Van Orden also known as the Mad Major is a Marine Lieutenant Commander operating out in Paradise. He is a brash and impulsive trouble magnet who often finds himself in the midst of one crisis after another. Yet he is a firm believer in what it means to be a Marine, an ardent follower of his own unique brand of justice, his tendency to fight corruption wherever it rears its head is quickly becoming legendary.

He dreams of one day becoming Fleet Admiral, of crushing the Yonko to bring peace to the New World, and perhaps most controversial of all - finding the One Piece. He firmly believes that if he can accomplish all of that - he very well might put an end to the era of piracy once and for all.

Following the events of Sea Star Grave End he has been provisionally assigned to SPEAR.

Relationships

Northstar Lysander

The two originally crossed swords during the events of Sea Star Grave End, wherein Lysander had razed an island to acquire a fabled sword. Quickly a battle between the Marine and Pirate ensued with Graves just barely coming out on top. Whilst enroute to the G-11, Graves made a surprising request, asking that Lysander essentially be pardoned for his crimes and put to better use than rotting in a cell. Admiral Haitori herself was intrigued and met with him and his prisoner. She would then transfer them both to SPEAR under Rear Admiral Kirimoto.

Graves stated reason was because he wanted to try a system different than the Warlords as he found it outdated and unreliable. However he would further state that he was living by the example his father set, by seeing beyond the bloodthirsty pirate and what the man could possibly be. Regardless the two have something like a rivalry, and despite his initial support, Graves attitude towards Lysanders swings from mild irritation to near hostility. He has yet to forgive the man for his crimes, but is at least willing to work with him to see that he save many more. Time will tell with whether their relationship will either grow of fester.

Powers & Abilities

Graves is an accomplished fighter and rising star of the Marines, having earned his promotion to Lieutenant Commander after exposing his superior for his corruption and crimes. He possesses exceptional battle acumen, is a keen strategist and is talented with a wide variety of weapons, tools, and technology that he frequently employs in battle. His Devil Fruit grants him unparalleled versatility in modifying his weaponry, allowing him to transform his tools to suit his needs in combat. He has exceptional physical abilities, and is able to wage battle across many fronts either as a skilled swordsman, a cunning sniper, or a tactical combat engineer deploying traps and area of denial armaments.

Fighting Style

The Gun Blade Ignition Style is a fighting developed and used by Graves Van Orden. It combines his swashbuckling flair and gunslinger skills with his Devil Fruit allowing him to unleash an onslaught of unpredictable attacks at his opponents. It is a style heavily characterized by the use of his great sword, his firearms, and use of gadgets and explosives to overwhelm, misdirect and dominate the battlefield. Using his Devil Fruit he can freely combine, or change his weaponry, armory, and tools at any time, switching them instantly in the midst of battle or creating entirely new tools depending on what equipment or terrain he has available. This makes him an extremely unpredictable opponent as he adapt his fighting style to any opponent he comes across.

Devil Fruit

Graves consumed the Sobi Sobi no Mi granting him an internal pocket dimension where he can store his weapons, gadgets, explosives, armor and other gear. From there he can summon and instantly equip any of the items stored inside. Furthermore he can either within his pocket dimension or through touch, modify, and combine said items for even greater utility. The number of items he can carry at any time appears to be without limit though there are limits as to what he can carry within his inventory. Using his Devil Fruit's power along with the vast array of tools at his disposal allows Graves to modify his entire fighting style as he needs.

The way his Devil Fruit functions in battle is through combination or hybridization. When he combines an item he uses a base item as the primary material which retains its form and overall function and by adding tools to it, he is able to change its general appearance taking on something that resembles a fusion of the two containing the form and functions of both. This is primarily used with his weapon and current sword Crimson Edge. By fusing a firearm to it, its form changes into what he aptly calls a Gunblade. Alternatively he has used this ability to essentially synthesize entirely new items from disparate or unusual parts. One of his creations the Freeze Bomb was crafted by equipping ice, an empty container like a flask, and gunpowder together to create it. This can be used for other items to create a variety of unusual or extraordinary effects seemingly without limit.

When he uses hybridization, he instead uses a base item which retains its original form, and is able to add the unique or special characteristics of any additional items equipped to it. This is most often seen in his ability to combine Dials together with his armor or clothing, his sword Crimson Grudge, or even with other dials. He discovered in battle that if he combines an Impact Dial with another, it will retain its original ability to absorb kinetic forces and explosions and when filled will release it. But not as a shockwave but whatever the other Dial hybridized with it is, such as a Flash Dial or Thunder Dial. Any time he equips an item, either on his person, combination or hybridization, it happens instantly, or as fast as he can think it. This enables him to adapt his armaments even while reacting to attacks, or even in the midst of his own attack.

Haki

Kenbunshoku Haki

Graves is unaware of the existence of Kenbunshoku Haki, having only a vague sense that higher up Marines possess acute senses and superhuman reflexes and combat analytical ability. At least how he rationalizes it.

Busoshoku Haki

Graves is currently unable to wield Busoshoku Haki. He knows and understands very little about it, other than that some higher up Marines possess extraordinary power to render even the powers of Devil Fruits fruitless before them.

Equipment

The power granted by Grave's Devil Fruit means that at all times he has an arsenal of weapons, tools, gadgets and other useful items at his disposal and as such possesses a rather broad range of equipment. With his Devil Fruit he is able to combine many items together to create even more unique ones depending on the circumstance or as needed during a battle. As such his inventory of equipment is rather large, comparable to a fully loaded armory. The fact that he can carry more ammunition, explosives, and resources than the average Marine also means that he tends to be prepared for a myriad of situations.

His overcoat is equipped with an Impact Dial to bolster his defenses, while his boots are equipped with Milky Dials, granting him propulsion and limited flight. On his arms he tends to equip Jet Dials to augment his martial prowess.
Fire-Retardant Duster	Is a modified suit outfitted with a breath dial to absorb toxic gases, and smoke, equipped to a breathing mask. There is also a flame dial and heat dial equipped to absorb both fire and any ambient heat so as to protect Graves.
Deep-Sea Diving Gear	Is a fully vacuum sealed rubber suit, outfitted with a breath dial that releases stored oxygen in a re-breather mask allowing Graves to operate underwater. It is also outfitted with a water dial equipped with a jet dial to allow for swift underwater maneuvering.
Cold-Resistant Gear	A fur covered duster and winter outfit equipped with a breath dial to absorb cold air, also is equipped with a heat dial to help regulate body temperature and keep the bearer consistently warm. The outfit sports gloves, boots and other wear common for winter temperatures.

Bomb Dial	A combination of a Flame Dial and an Impact Dial, that releases an explosive shockwave. It can also store explosions, shockwaves and other forms of kinetic force.
Eisen Dial	Emits a stream of "iron cloud", which has the strength of iron but a cloud's weightlessness and ability to change shape. It can lengthen and/or widen without limits, and form constructs.
Flame Dial	Stores and releases fire, typically released as streams of fire.
Flash Dial	Stores and releases light. Releases an extremely bright but temporary flash of light, capable of blinding those nearby.
Heat Dial	Stores and releases heat energy. When used on a weapon it becomes red hot and burns at the touch.
Impact Dial	One of the strongest naturally occurring dials, it can store any kind of kinetic force, generally blunt or those caused of shockwaves or other waves such as from explosions. When released it releases the stored energy back as a shockwave causing internal damage.
Jet Dial	Is a much more rare and powerful version of the Breath Dial which blows out a powerful burst of air at great speed. This allows them to be used for much faster propulsion than a Breath Dial.
Milky Dial	Can store and release clouds. This can be used to create pathways in the air out of sea clouds, and is typically used as a form of propulsion.
Orden Dial 01	An experimental dial given to Graves by Tony that integrates with the user. The dial is infused with radical technology that allows it to operate as a generator allowing him to create energy based weapons which release a concussive force when used as an attack. This generator also serves as a on-site on-demand fabricator that allows him to absorb in-organic material from the environment and using built-in blueprints reconstruct said material into various tools for his disposal.
Perpetual Dial	A Dial created by Caelum Liutas. It is capable of absorbing and storing any form of element or power used against it. This dial when unleashed releases a fast tornado attack of whatever what was stored.
Reject Dial	Is a more rare and powerful version of the Impact Dial. When used, it unleashes whatever force it had absorbed up to that point, but also magnifies that force tenfold. It's a powerful weapon, but the backlash is hazardous to the user and powerful enough to destroy the body of one who is inexperienced. Due to this, they are rarely used.
Thunder Dial	Stores and releases electricity.
Tone Dial	Is able to record and replay sounds spoken into it, akin to an audio recorder
Vision Dial	Can be used to capture, store and playback images.
Water Dial	Stores and releases water.

Swords

• Crimson Grudge: A Grade Meito and a cursed weapon possessing the power to siphon the wielders negative emotions and transform it into power. As the wielder's emotions run high, the blade begins to glow with a crimson hue increasing its cutting power and damage. The wounds inflicted by this sword bleed profusely, acting similar in manner to a hemotoxin.

Firearms

Bazooka "Lawful Order"	This large, shoulder-mounted weapon is designed to launch high-yield explosive or other specialized missiles. Graves is able to fire modified ordinance called Mechanis Shells, each one capable of unique effects. This weapon is also capable of firing nets as it has a net launcher equipped to it.
Quad-Barreled Shotgun "Peacekeeper"	This is a short-range quad barreled shotgun capable of firing up to four shots at the same time. It is one of Graves most favored short-range weapons as he can overwhelm his opponents with explosive ordinance usually by baiting them into close range or as a surprise attack while in melee range. Like the Bazooka, he is able to fire Mechanis Shells using this firearm. Since he can use his Devil Fruit to equip items from within his personal dimension he can directly load the munitions in the Shotgun without having to manually reload.
Revolver Sniper "Grand Jury"	This is a hybridized long-range sniper rifle that has been equipped with a revolver. This combination allows Graves to cycle through shots as if the weapon was a revolver and use specialized ammunition for extreme long range combat. The weapon is also equipped with a static thunder dial which effectively turns the weapon into a hand-held railgun.
Grappling Hook	A simple grappling hook that can be fired releasing a lengthy carbon cable with a hook mechanism that can attach to nearby surfaces and pull the user. Usually used in the event Graves has equipped a jet dial or milky dial elsewhere and needs to gain distance or escape.

Explosives

Bomb	A round explosive device, that on impact or after a delayed countdown detonates releasing a shockwave, shrapnel and fire.
Freeze Bomb	An explosive that instead releases chilling winds that instantly flash freeze anything within the radius of the explosion.
Thunder Bomb	An explosive that instead releases currents of electricity and electromagnetic waves. Due to the high voltage this device also doubles as an EMP.
Fire Bomb	An explosive that releases naplam blanketing an area in flames.
Gust Bomb	An explosive that instead releases powerful gusts of wind that blow everything around it away.
Smoke Bomb	Releases a plume of smoke that obscures everything within the area. Unless acted on, the smoke lingers and can cause some debilitating effects such as difficulty breathing, and inflammation in the eyes, nose, and lungs.

  • The name "Graves" is taken from Marine General Graves B. Erskine, who was notable for his military accomplishments in both WWI and WWII.
  • The surname "Van Orden" is taken from Marine Brigadier General George O. Van Orden, who was known as the "Father of Marine Snipers".
  • The overall fighting style employed by Graves is heavily inspired by the character Troubleshooter from DnF Duel.

• Favorite Foods: Graves enjoys a chicken or pork katsu curry, which was a staple in his home as a child. Other than that while he doesn't mind the chow hall on a Marine base, he prefers home cooked meals, and when thankful citizens give him gifts he has let it known that he prefers food over all others.
• Least Favorite: The chow hall food provided by most Marine bases. While the quality is decent, as its made to serve hundreds if not thousands of Marines, Graves find it a little bland. Privately he wishes that he could hire a private cook or obtain an extraordinary cook as a teammate.
