Redgrave D. Zelgadis is a battle hardened pirate and mercenary who attained renown during the War of Empires. Originally siding with the Emperor's this would later turn out to be a ploy as he betrayed them at the height of the war, unleashing his hellfire upon their fleet and taking command of their forces.
With the combined might of the fleets under his direct control, he became a vanguard against their reinforcements, a gambit which proved to their undoing as this provided the Marines the window they needed to face them unimpeded. This treachery would be one of several catalysts that led to the demise of the Emperors and the dissolution of their alliance, finally putting an end to the war. It is here that he earned his epithet of the Hellfire Tyrant.
He has since sailed throughout the New World, honing his skills and challenging anyone and anything he could. For he has the ambition to find the One Piece and become King of the Pirates. For in his view, the one who possesses this title, is the one who invites the most challenges. His dream is to become known as the Conqueror of Adversity; he who conquers all between heaven and earth!
While his participation in the War of Empires is what garnered him renown in the New World, he was known by a very different epithet in Paradise. Though he is indeed a Pirate and a wanted man, he was predominately known for his mercenary work. In the first half of the Grand Line, Zelgadis was a notorious and unusual mercenary selling his services not to the highest bidder, but to the ones who provided the most challenges.
He also had a tendency to take work against other pirates, and indeed the Underworld itself. He was a demon, and a plague that pillaged, and plundered crime lords, slavers, and other unsavory sorts, including Marines. After all, they typically had the most men, the most dangerous under their employ, and were the most arrogant. He even established a network, and contacts who would aid him. He was the boogeyman of the rich, the terror of those who wronged the innocents, he was the Ghost of Paradise.

Zelgadis is one of the rare warriors of the sea who is capable of wielding Haoshoku Haki.

Busoshoku Haki[]
As a warrior who constantly seeks the thrill of conquest Zelgadis prefers his battles to be face to face, and as such his use and reliance on Busoshoku Haki has allowed him to accumulate considerable skill in this technique. In battle he favors an approach where he hardens his entire body with Busoshoku Haki and is able to fight for an extended period of time using this method. During the assault on Rockbell Island, Zelgadis used his flames as medium to enshroud and then harden the bodies of civilians and marines to protect them during the battle. He would later in that same battle, enshroud vast portions of the town and harden them to protect the island from the effects of the battle waged by Fleet Admiral Kyojin, and the Yonko Blacklight Caesar until the civilians were able to safely evacuate. He has also gained enough skill to utilize the advanced application of emitting Busoshoku Haki from his body, allowing him to attack opponents without making physical contact. This power greatly augments his fighting prowess. This advanced skill is used predominately in his transformed state; Infernal Sovereign.
