Mad Grinn (?) is an explorer coursing through the seas of the Grand Line, traveling in his floating fortress, Castle Vein. During his encounter with the king of Alabasta, and the future king of Rosenshiel, it was revealed his true name to be Penumbra Zephan, and that he acted as Penumbra Kingdom's monarch for around a century. While his true goals remain unclear, he has stated his intention of reaching the Solarian Federation, which he believes to be the true culprits of his nation's destruction.

He is one of two survivors of the Penumbra Kingdom's genocide that took place towards the end of the War of Empires.

His extended life span and youthful appearance, stems from being the consumer of the Mythical Zoan Batto Batto no Mi, Model: Vampire.

Appearance[]

Gallery[]

Grinn appears as a young man with short, pearl white hair and gleaming purple eyes. He is of regular stature with a lean build, and usually sports a grin which allows his rows of sharp teeth to be in view. Mad Grinn enjoys dressing in regal attire and is constantly changing wardrobes, keeping true to his royal status. His usual attire consist of a white or black formal shirt under a vest, with various adornments and wearing a large cape or cloak over his shoulders.

As Penumbra Zephan, Grinn's appearance differed from his current one. Based on his and Crow's memories, he used to be of a greater stature, had longer, flowing hair and had a well kept beard. He seldom smiled, and exuded an air that commanded respect and loyalty from his subordinates and subjects.

During Valentine's Day on Kyuka Island, Grinn cornered and trapped the Lockwoods, a married couple and some of the business owners and traders that once made deals and negotiated with the Penumbra Kingdom. After the Kingdom tragically fell, the business pair took over the Dark Stone trade, monopolizing the resource and becoming quite successful within the public eye and in the Underworld. As he taunted them and spoke of his intentions of recovering the dark stones and taking back the "family business', he drained Arthur Lockwood of the entirety of his blood, and let Melina Lockwood escape, despite leaving her weakened and frail.

This was due to him wanting her to inform her associates and hoping her actions "flushed them out", so it would be easier for him to take them down. He seemed to enjoy the view from the hotel penthouse, yet commanded Crow to alter the sunny weather, as he preferred cloudy and gloomy days that reminded him of his home, especially in days where he would "feast".

Unbeknownst to him, this whim of his attracted the attention of Vesper Sylk, a bounty hunter that was in the midst of a job on the same island. The unnatural change in weather was noticed by Sylk, and she was able to track down the source, the highest room in the hotel, the first class penthouse. As she stepped in and annoucned herself, the ambience became ominous, with a red mist seemingly emerging from nowhere, candles being flicked on and a maid that seemed to be acting not of her own will. From the mist, Grinn emerged and addressed Sylk, pouring wine and inviting her for dinner, as he made light of the maid's unwilling and unnatural behavior, and the corpse of Arthur Lockwood laying behind him.
