"Blue Deer" Lowenthal David is a young man who found in himself a desire to bring justice to the world, inspiring him to join the Marines.[1][2] David is also known for his love of Wano Country. David has trained a good deal under Corindon Cyan, after accompanying her on various assignments.
David came across the the Ushi Ushi no Mi, Model: Kirin and consumed it.[6] Gaining this power only strengthened David's resolve that he is connected to Wano and destined for its greatness - at least according to himself. His strength and training have allowed him to be promoted to the rank of commodore.[4]

David is close with Corindon Cyan, one of the Vice Admirals within the Marines. The woman is a few years his senior and helped trained him as an early recruit within the organization. David has shown himself to be quite loyal to her carrying out her various orders with little to no complaint and seeking her approval. In truth, David has feelings for Cyan and wishes to win her over romantically.[1]

- David is inspired by Naruto Uzumaki and Minato Namikaze from the Naruto series.
- David's name is taken from Yuri Lowenthal and David Lodge, two well known English voice actors for English anime dubs. They voice two characters important to the main character of Naruto, namely that of Sasuke Uchiha and Jiraiya respectively. Lowenthal can mean "lion valley", while David can mean "beloved".[1]
- David's unique laugh of "bayoyoyo" (ばよよよ?) is a reference to Naruto's catchphrase of "dattebayo" (だってばよ?).[1]
- David's initial outfit was intentionally made to look like a Marine version of a the clothing Minato wore.
- David's epithet of Blue Deer (青鹿 Aoka?) is derived from the deer-like appearance of his Ushi Ushi no Mi, Model: Kirin. It is also based on the name of a mentor he had a crush on in a previous story.[1]
- David is based on the idea of Japanophilia, namely when it comes to foreigners being obsessed with anime and manga. Those like this are often called "weeaboo", being the source of his epithet.
