"Dread King" Heidrun Ask Thrymr is the Giant King of Elbaph, Fimbultyr of the Ragnarok Pirates, and one of the current Yonko that rule over the New World.[1][8][9] Despite this, Thrymr and his crew rarely set sail away from Elbaph and he has expressed little interest capturing non-Giant territories, going as far to say the title of King has more value to him than that of Yonko.

Thrymr ate the Soru Soru no Mi, giving him many spiritual powers as a result. This allowed his to create several Homies, beings that he instead refers to as the Vaettir. These creatures - Audum, Modi, Skoll, and Sleip - are among the beings Thrymr trusts the most. He was the husband of the late Heidrun Embla and is the father of Skadi, Nott, and Surtr by her.[10][11] He also wields the powerful spear Gungnir, one of the 12 Supreme Grade Meito in the world. He currently holds a bounty of Beli4,320,540,000.[6][7]

With his combined power of the Soru Soru no Mi and his infamous raids across the planet to free indentured and enslaved giants, many came to deeply fear the arrival of Thrymr on their shores. This ultimately led to Thrymr being labelled the "Dread King". After claiming the throne of Elbaph, Thrymr would be declared one of the Yonko for being a pirate in control of the most powerful military nation in the world. With his legacy of freeing and protecting giants, many giant territories outside of Elbaph pledged loyalty to Thrymr, leading to him being known as the "Emperor of the Giants".

Heidrun Embla[]

Heidrun Skadi[]

Heidrun Skadi is the first child of Thrymr, as well as his first and only daughter. Thrymr has a great deal of love for his daughter, to the point that his son has accused Skadi of being able to get her way with him no matter what. Despite this favortism, Thrymr does put a great deal of expectation on Skadi as she is to inherit the throne of Elbaph one day. With this, Thrymr has had her trained to fight by the members of the Ragnarok Pirates, as well as rarely allow her to leave the island of Elbaph to try and prevent any harm from befalling her.

However, Thrymr recognizes that much of his own personality is within Skadi - namely her love of adventures and fighting. While hesitant, he does allow Skadi to set out with her own crew. In Thrymr's mind, he sees it as a means for her to grow in both leadership and maturity before returning to Elbaph.

Petra[]

At some point, Thrymr met Petra, the Captain of the Hydra of the Tempest Pirates. The woman sought to take control of the Underworld position over prostitution, to which Thrymr was appalled but saw a benefit to. The Giant King agreed to help use his power and influence to secure her the position, so long as Petra contacts him any time a Giant comes into her care that was forced into the position. Thrymr uses this to purchase their way out of the sex trafficking ring and have them transported to Elbaph. Thrymr has also threatened Petra that should his daughter somehow end up in her care, failure to report it immediately would result in him razing her island and crew beneath the waves. Despite his threats, he does seem to trust Petra.

Eris[]

Of the Yonko prior to the War of Empires, Eris was the one Thrymr respected and favored the most. He saw her as a fellow non-human ruler fighting for the betterment of her people, much like his own rule. The two did clash at one point in the past for unknown reasons, with Eris scarring Thrymr's chest with her claws and Thrymr creating Modi from the power of her Electro. Despite their various wounds, their battle would become inconclusive as the two came to respect one another.

When the War of Empires waged on, Thrymr considered joining it on the side of the Animal Kingdom in an effort to crush the World Government once and for all. However, despite his respect for her, he ultimately decided it was not Elbaph's fight and remained out of the conflict. When he heard news of her supposed death, Thrymr felt saddened and invited all of the Mink-Giant hybrids of Elbaph to honor her memory.

Gladius Caesar[]

Thrymr holds both contempt and respect for Gladius Caesar and the Legion Pirates. Their styles and manners of rule oppose one another, with Thrymr viewing Caesar as little more than a particularly powerful maniac. Despite this, Thrymr respects his power and rule over his territories. He also appears grateful for Caesar to some extent, as after losing his eye to the man, Thrymr was pushed to develop his Kenbunshoku Haki to the point of developing the ability to peer into the future itself - an ability that Thrymr deems as greater than possessing his two eyes. Thrymr warned his daughter to not enter into the domain of Caesar, especially Dressrosa itself, in order to maintain an uneasy peace between the two. Despite this, Thrymr does not fear the man and believe himself more than capable of dealing with the Blacklight should they ever come to arms again.

Devil Fruit[]

Main article: Soru Soru no Mi

At some point, Thrymr ate the Soru Soru no Mi - a powerful Paramecia-type Devil Fruit. With it, Thrymr has the power to interact with and manipulate souls. As such, Thrymr can harvest parts of the soul of those who fear him - a feat that is not difficult for the warrior king of Elbaph with his great strength and impressive military power. With this, Thrymr can take as much of their lifespan as he sees fit.

From there, Thrymr can infuse the soul fragments into animals, plants, and various objects to create Homies, or Vaettir as Thrymr calls them. These Vaettir can prove to be powerful support in combat and Thrymr can rapidly create them on a whim. However, these are usages of the fruit that Thrymr rarely taps into - instead preferring to create Special Vaettir by using fragments of his own soul. These Vaettir are far stronger and have more versatile abilities compared to normal ones. Thrymr primarily uses the ability to create homies out of various elements to aid him in combat.

Thrymr has awakened the power of the Soru Soru no Mi.[15]

Weapons[]

Main article: Gungnir

Haki[]

Thrymr is incredibly proficient and powerful with the ability to use Haki. He possesses the rare ability to use all three forms of Haki, having honed each ability of the course of his time as the Fimbultyr of the Ragnarok Pirates and reign over Elbaph.[16] Due to his numerous years actively using them, Thrymr has also gained the ability to use multiple advanced versions of Haki.[16][17][18] With these abilities, Thrymr is an incredibly difficult person to fight.

Kenbunshoku Haki[]

Thrymr is skilled with Kenbunshoku Haki. With it, he can sense presences, emotions, and the general strength of others. Further, it gives him the ability to more easily react and evade attacks aimed at him. Due to his years of usage of it, Thrymr has developed the ability to peer into the future.[17] This allows him to use it to throw his spear into where his opponent is fleeing - making it appear as though the king of the giants never misses.

Busoshoku Haki[]

Thrymr is capable of using Busoshoku Haki, considering it to be his most used form. He often armors himself with it to increase his strength and durability, as well as infuse it into his weapons to increase their power. He can combine this with his Haoshoku Infusion to further strengthen his will. Thrymr is also capable of emitting his Busoshoku Haki as an invisible force, giving him a longer ranged variant of the ability to attack with.[17] Thrymr is also capable of channeling his Busoshoku Haki into his target to attack them internally, bypassing defenses and letting him more easily combat foes much larger than himself, however rare that may be.[18]

Haoshoku Haki[]

Thrymr Haoshoku Infusion

Thrymr infusing his Haoshoku Haki into Gungnir.

Thrymr is capable of using Haoshoku Haki. It is not fully known when he awakened it, but he fits many of the criteria known for it: having become a captain of his own crew, being of a noble background, and following the great dream of freeing and unifying the various Giant tribes that filled the world. Eventually, he would also desire to rule Elbaph, achieving it and become its sole ruler. These traits manifested in the power of Haoshoku Haki, with his being incredibly potent due to his raw spiritual power and size. Few can withstand the full power of it, which Thrymr seldom releases.[16]

Further, Thrymr possesses the even rarer power of infusing his Haoshoku Haki into things.[16] This is most commonly achieved with his trusted spear, spear. With it, Thrymr drastically increases the power of his weapons and attacks.

History[]

Past[]

Main article: Buried Past

Thrymr was born to the Heidrun family of Elbaph many years ago. His family was a small noble family upon the island, with many feeling as though their status would fade within the next few generations. As a result of the lower prestige, Thrymr decided to earn his fame in the world by other means. At some point, he set out from Elbaph, forming the Ragnarok Pirates from Giants loyal to him - taking with him the Gungnir of his clan.

Not much is known about his early life of piracy, but it is known that he spent a great deal of it releasing slaves to humanity - especially that of his Giant brethren. His journeys led to him uncovering the Soru Soru no Mi, a fruit that he consumed give him power over spirits. This led to him, at some point, freeing Norn - one of his most trusted allies.

Eventually, Thrymr would learn that the king of Elbaph has fallen ill without an heir. As such, it was decided the various noble clans would send a champion to fight for the throne - raising the winner to the ruler of the island and their clan the new royal family. Unwilling to lose out on such an opportunity, Thrmyr raced his crew back to Elbaph. Even the minor, failing Heidrun clan was eligible - to which Thrymr seized the moment to defeat his giant brethren with the power he accumulated on the seas - even the father of Angrboda of the Bestla clan.

Now crowned the king in 1570, Thrymr's combined status of the captain of the Ragnarok Pirates and the ruler of Elbaph made the World Government fear the potential he possessed. As such, he was proclaimed a Yonko shortly after his coronation, much to Thrymr's apathy. As the king, Thrymr would prove his strength and ability to rule, gaining the confidence of Elbaph and the love of a beautiful giantess named Embla. Thrymr and Embla would eventually marry and produce two children: Heidrun Skadi and Heidrun Nott.

At some point, he would also come across Gladius Caesar, a powerful rival that damaged one of his eyes beyond repair during a battle between the two. He would also deal with a half-Giant named Einarr worked up the ranks of the Ragnarok Pirates. Despite holding a fruit the Elbaphians believed to be an evil omen, Thrymr trusted his power. Despite this, Einarr would reveal his ill intentions when he released a blood-born pathogen that killed many across Elbaph - including Queen Embla. Einarr would escape before Thrymr could slay him for his crimes, leading to him mourning his great loss and seeking retribution.

Beginning in 1618, the War of Empires waged one - killing the three Admirals of the Marines and two of the Yonko, supposedly including Eris. While he desired the destruction of the World Government, he refrained from joining as his people were still recovering from the pandemic and rebuilding their forces. Further, he did not want to risk orphaning his children should the tides turn against him. As such, he was the only Yonko to not join the conflict overall, never contacting the other forces involved.

Trivia[]

Behind the Scenes[]

  • Thrmyr's name is Scandinavian in origin, drawing inspiration from figures in Norse mythology.[1]
    • Heidrun can translate to "bright clearing". It is the name of a mythical goat that consumes leaves from a mythical tree - often identified with Yggdrasil, the world tree - and produces mead for the warriors of Valhalla from its udders.
    • Thrmyr can translate to "noise" and is the name of a jotunn in Norse mythology.
    • Thrmyr's middle name is Ask. This is an old Scandinavian name that means "ash tree" and is the name of the first man in Norse mythology.
  • Thrmyr's epithet of "Dread King" is derived from an epithet of Hades in Greek mythology, the god of the underworld, the dead, and riches.[1]
  • Thrymr is meant to resemble Odin, based on his typical attributes in the myths. This includes his usage of Gungnir being based on Odin's own spear. Further, his wearing of an eyepatch with the ability to use Future Vision is based on Odin sacrificing an eye to gain immense wisdom.
  • Thrymr's birthday of December 21th is on one of the days the winter solstice sometimes falls upon in the Northern Hemisphere.[1]
  • Thrymr's unique laugh of "kowawawa" (こわわわ?) is derived from "kowa" (こわ?), an interjection that means "frightening" or "terrifying".[1]
  • Thrymr's ideal voice actors would be Tesshō Genda and Christopher Judge for Japanese and English respectively.[1] They taken from Kratos from the God of War franchise. Tesshō is also the voice actor for Kaido in the canon One Piece series.
  • Thrymr's bounty has always been a multiple of 3, a trend common in many Nordic myths involving numbers. His bounty as of 1620 has been the subject of a few retcons.
    • Initially, Thrymr was written with a bounty of Beli3,309,630,000. Thrymr's initial bounty was allowed prior to the application system.
    • The initial bounty was later lowered to Beli3,150,000,000 as Thyrmr is more of an isolationist and did not participate in the War of Empires. As such, the author did not think it made sense for Thrymr to have a higher bounty than the more active threat of Gladius Caesar - who at the time had a bounty of Beli3,154,400,000 prior to his own retcon.
    • Finally, upon evaluation of major bounties that would have been assigned prior to the beginning of the story on the wiki, Thrymr was retconned to have a bounty of Beli4,320,540,000.[6]
