A skillfully crafted Katana, it was one of the Admiral's signature weapons prior to her demise, ranking as one of the Meito - specifically, being one of the 21 Great Grade Swords.

As per Riko's own instructions in the event of her death, Fuhen Kadai was "buried with her", acting as her gravestone.

Appearance[]

Fuhen Kadai does not have an overly elaborate appearance, with a simple green-wrapped handle and a golden tsuba, which extends to partially encompass the blade's Mune. Its Saya is black with a red Sageo hanging chord.

Abilities[]

As a Great Grade Meito, Fuhen Kadai became a feared and deadly weapon. While its counterpart was mostly used alongside the Gentle Blade school of swordsmanship, it was instead utilized with Strong Blade, emphasizing tremendously powerful cuts that were able to cut almost any enemy asunder.

Befitting a sword of its rank, Fuhen Kadai is immensely durable, having withstood the test of decades long before Riko claimed it while still retaining full effectiveness. Throughout its long history, it suffering no forms of permanent damage, even when faced with some of the strongest forces in the world during the War of Empires.

History[]

Fuhen Kadai is a relic of the Shogi Kingdom's warring period, being a legendary sword that passed down from user to user as its many wielders took each other's lives. This made the sword renowned for its tremendously high quality, but also for the enormous target it painted upon its owner's back.

Once Shogi turned away from its constant inner warfare and embraced peace, Fuhen Kadai became a symbol of the bloody past the Kingdom had forsaken, and its new principles of fraternity and support without fully abandoning their fighting ways. It was proclaimed the Kingdom's National Treasure, and it became the prize for the winner of the Scarlet Cloud Festival by ancestral law. Many wielded Fuhen Kadai since then, often losing their right to its ownership by the next Festival.

Owned by Riko[]

Yukyu Riko, a Marine Officer at the time, would earn ownership Fuhen Kadai by winning the Scarlet Cloud Festival of 1597, using it alongside Mugentei Hikari as her weapons of choice and defending her ownership of the weapon for over twenty years. After Riko died in the War of Empires, the sword - still hers by right, as she remained undefeated even in death - would be used as a marker of her grave.

Trivia[]

  • Fuhen Kadai's name is shorter than Mugentei Hikari's, despite Katanas usually being longer and generally larger than Wakizashis.
  • Fuhen Kadai and Mugentei Hikari are parallels to each other:
    • Fuhen Kadai represents Riko in her capacity as a Marine Admiral. It is a sword of great renown she earned through her overwhelming strength, and was buried with her once her life - and her career - were over.
    • By contrast, Mugentei Hikari represents her as a teacher.
