Hailing from an unknown island, Bastion was outcast by its school, and thus left alone long enough to be easy prey for businessmen who sought to sell him onto culinary masters or as a glorified pet for anyone so willing to take him. A fate which would have ended poorly either for him or for whoever bought him if not for the thieves who stole him and a vast piece of the 'glimmer' in the middle of night.
Once there he ate what he could during a time of the thieves' indifference and lack of attention of their surroundings, the young fish slipped out of his confinements and ate whatever it could find to sustain itself with. Among the things found was a strange and bitter tasting fruit which was consumed out of desperation. The desperation of the deed saw to the end of the whole camp and a good bit of forest as he exploded in size.
Found by a pirate woman named Tatsumaki, who gave him his name, he has been taken and brought along on her journey to establish a dominance for another pirate crew. Not that Bastion could comprehend any of that. All he knows is that Tatsumaki wants to do things and so he will help her in doing these things. What she wants, he will do with glee and enthusiasm. Why? Because she is the School-Head.
Because she is his mommy.
